Alteration is a first-person, narrative-driven interactive experience that blends psychological horror, science fiction and philosophical mystery. Structured as a linear and cinematic journey rather than a traditional open-world game, Alteration places the player inside a succession of surreal and often unsettling scenarios that must be observed, interpreted and understood in order to progress. The experience combines environmental storytelling, language-based puzzles, symbolic imagery and cinematic sequences, revealing its narrative gradually through player discovery rather than direct exposition. At the center of the story is a subject undergoing an experimental process that radically alters perception. As the boundaries of reality begin to collapse, the player moves through fragmented environments spanning laboratories, post-apocalyptic landscapes, ancient temples, mythological settings and dreamlike spaces. Time, identity and causality become increasingly unstable, while a recurring figure known as the Shadow Man appears to guide, threaten and mirror the player. The narrative explores themes of consciousness, simulation, divinity, identity and humanity’s desire to understand what may exist beyond ordinary perception. Religious, mythological and historical imagery is woven throughout the experience, alongside ancient languages and writing systems that form an important part of both the puzzles and the worldbuilding. A central idea behind Alteration is ambiguity. The events experienced by the player can be interpreted in several ways: as the result of a scientific experiment, the fragmentation of consciousness, an encounter with something genuinely beyond human understanding, or a combination of all three. The game deliberately avoids confirming a single definitive explanation. Player choices influence the route through the experience and lead to different scenarios and endings. However, these choices are designed less around conventional morality and more around interpretation, perception and the player’s understanding of what is happening. Visually, Alteration combines realistic environments with surreal imagery, recurring motifs such as eclipses, fire, shadows and ancient symbols, and strong contrasts between light and darkness. The overall tone is atmospheric, unsettling and contemplative. Developed by Asteria Interactive, Alteration is intended as a complete free interactive experience and as a showcase of the studio’s approach to cinematic storytelling, experimental game design and immersive digital media.
